California Burning

A wind-whipped wildfire raging through a luxury neighborhood near Santa Barbara where several celebrities live has destroyed more than 100 homes in less than 24 hours. Firefighters beat back the blaze today, but the afternoon winds could kick up the flames. ABC News correspondent Brian Rooney will be live with the latest.

Totally Retired

For a decade, MTV's Total Request Live has been a Times Square fixture, providing a place along the way for stars like Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys to launch their careers. But along came the Internet and MTV's reality-television programming, and TRL's cachet started to fade. U.S. Still Losing a Brigade's Worth of Vets Every Year to Suicide By Penny Coleman, AlterNet Obviously, the most immediate and reliable way to prevent soldier suicides is to get troops out of harm's way -- bring them home. Read more »   Earlier this week, Kelly Dougherty, Executive Director of Iraq Veterans Against the War, sent out a Veterans Day message. "While it is fitting that our nation reserves a special day to honor the sacrifice and commitment of our warriors," she wrote, "it also serves to highlight how we, as a country, have fallen short of caring for our veterans, reintegrating them back into our communities, and demanding that our military be used responsibly and only as a last resort." Over 1.7 million men and women of the U.S. military have served in Iraq and Afghanistan, and many of them now struggle to cope with physical and emotional injuries, with family relationships strained because of prolonged separation, and with finding employment during an economic recession. Driving this home is a sobering article this week by AlterNet author Penny Coleman, who reports on the staggering suicide rates among returning soldiers, numbers that would shake the American people awake if they were more widely reported. "Every year we lose about a rifle platoon worth of Marines to suicide," a Navy chaplain recently told a gathering of recruits, according to Coleman. "There is no tomorrow. Tomorrow will be too late. 5:30 PM, 11/14/08, Update: Shuttle crew on board; weather appears favorable

The shuttle Endeavour's crew strapped in for launch today as a smooth-running  countdown moved into its final stages. Technicians are assisting the astronauts with final seat and suit checks before closing the hatch, securing the "white room" and leaving the area. The shuttle is fully fueled, there are no technical problems of any significance and forecasters say the weather appears to be cooperating. The closest showers of any significance are more than 100 miles away and while it appears a bit windy at the press site, forecasters do not expect any flight rule violations. Launch remains targeted for 7:55:39 p.m., roughly the moment Earth's rotation carries pad 39A into the plane of the international space station's orbit.
