The Note: Do Him Good: Obama's 'Change' Meets Reality

The Note Is Ready!

Barack Obama is running as smooth as a transition as he could have imagined, but the additions of old hands in a new administration is defining "change" in a way that could disappoint some of his ardent supporters, ABC News senior political reporter Rick Klein writes in Thursday's Note. And as the GOP struggles to find a new identity, what better way to signal a break with the McCain era than for the Republican Party to take on the McCain-Feingold law itself?

Russ Mitchell: Global financial meltdown continues

Nov. 13, 2008

Hi, everyone!

We began the show today with the latest  on the global financial situation. Japan's Nikkei index fell almost 500 points today, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng dropped nearly seven percent. The Dow continued  its three-day slide yesterday, closing with a loss of more than 400 points. Art Cashin, the director ofloor trading operations at the New York Stock Exchange for UBS Financial Services, joined us this morning to offer his insight.

There are new details this morning, and plenty of unanswered questions, about the $700 billion bailout plan Congress approved last month. CBS News Investigative Correspondent Sharyl Attkisson was on Capitol Hill to give us some idea of how the money will be spent.

This morning in HealthWatch: an interesting request from a man of the cloth. A pastor in Dallas has issued the married couples in his congregation an unusual challengeto have sex for seven days. He spoke with Julie about what he hopes to accomplish with what he calls a new “sex-periment” in the church.

Next, we jumped ahead in our series, "Five Days, Five Decades," taking a trip down memory lane back to the 1980s. That decade had its share of tragic events, but also gave us great leaders, amazing entertainers, good movies, and innovations in areas from technology to toys.

One of the most popular TV shows of the '80s was "Dynasty," in which Joan Collins played the cunning and vindictive Alexis Carrington, whose scheming was legendary. She joined us today to talk about her time on the show and to give a special sendoff to Maggie, who left from the set for a "Destination Unknown," as the series is called. Tune in tomorrow to find out where she went!

We revisited the music of the '80s with the  stars who had some of the decade's biggest hits. First up: Stacey Q, who performed  her hit song "Two of Hearts," one of the hottest singles of 1986. Bertie Higgins' romantic tune, "Key Largo," caught fire in the early '80s and boosted him to international stardom. Bertie also joined us to perform his hit, as did  Katrina. Remember her from Katrina And The Waves? She closed our broadcast with her big tune, "Walkin' on Sunshine."

Lots more tomorrow, including a look back at the '90s. And we'll hear from Maggie, live from what is still her "Destination Unknown"! See you then.
