TONIGHT ON THE CBS EVENING NEWS

Here’s an early look at what we are working on from Anchor and Managing Editor of The CBS Evening News, Katie Couric

Hi everyone,

It is take two for the government’s $700 billion financial rescue plan. Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson said today that instead of buying back toxic mortgages, the government will invest more money directly into banks. It’s a complicated story, but Anthony Mason will walk us through what this change means, and where all that money is going.

Sharyl Attkisson will follow up by examining what happened to the “transparency” that was promised as it divides up your tax dollars and invests them in banks. The government’s money men are making many of these decisions under a veil of secrecy. Sharyl looks at what we know - and don’t know - about the bailout.

Did you know less than 1 percent of the average American’s income went towards savings last year? In our special series, The Other America, Seth Doane introduces us to one woman who lost everything - but who's succeeded in starting over. She's even putting money away … with a little help from a new program that's aimed at teaching how to save. And that's something we could all learn from.

You've heard of Internet viruses, but what about software so smart it can tell if a virus - specifically, the flu - is coming to your neighborhood? Could a search engine be better at predicting an outbreak than government experts? Mark Strassmann shows us Google's new “flu symptom” tracking.

Finally tonight: Remember Charles Kuralt's legendary On The Road dispatches? Well, 30 years later, our Steve Hartman has decided to trace his footsteps on some of the most moving stories about everyday Americans that Charles found. We're calling this new series, On The Road … Again, and it debuts tonight with an update on what was one of Kuralt’s biggest yarns. Check out a preview here. Click Here

A man who builds beautiful birch bark canoes by hand. Steve Hartman goes ON THE ROAD AGAIN TOMORROW NIGHT, ONLY on the THE CBS EVENING NEWS.

FIVE DAYS FIVE DECADES: THE 1980’s - Thursday, we continue our series Five Days Five Decades with a look at the 1980’s...when big hair and perms were cool and shoulder pads and leg warmers were apart of your everyday wardrobe. MTV made its debut and your favorite eighties one hit wonders hit the airwaves. Take a walk back in time with us and remember your childhood 80’s memories.
