Smoke tax issue reignites

A study that ranks South Carolina 13th highest in the country for its number of uninsured children prompted the state's legislative leaders to say Tuesday that lawmakers likely will raise the cigarette tax early next year and use the money to provide health care coverage. House Speaker Bobby Harrell and Senate President Pro Tem Glenn McConnell, both Charleston Republicans, said they expect the vote to come after lawmakers return in January. At 7 cents per pack, South Carolina has the nation's lowest cigarette tax.

Pair report abduction from CSU

Charleston Southern University was placed on lockdown Tuesday night after two people were apparently abducted at gunpoint in the parking lot, taken to a nearby apartment complex and held up. The robbers walked away with about $35 in the 7:45 p.m. incident that began at the campus on U.S. Highway 78 near Interstate 26.

Group wants workplace raids halted

A statewide Christian group has called for a moratorium on federal immigration raids in South Carolina, at least until the U.S. government overhauls its immigration laws. A workplace raid that netted more than 300 suspected illegal immigrants at the Columbia Farms plant in Greenville last month was one of the main factors that prompted Monday's statement from the South Carolina Christian Action Council.

New take-home car policy parked

MONCKS CORNER â€" Berkeley County Council has tapped the brakes on a plan to vastly reduce the number of take-home cars driven by non-law enforcement employees. The council on Monday night declined to take action on a proposed policy restricting who gets to drive a take-home car. Councilmen said they still support cutting vehicle costs but want more information about how it would impact customer service and employee compensation packages.

Swinney trying to make a case

CLEMSON â€" The search for Clemson's next football coach is moving swiftly, and all the while the interim coach is trying to show that the right man for the job is right under athletic director Terry Don Phillips' nose. Dabo Swinney probably knows that his chances are bleak if the Tigers don't find a way to close the season with a flourish. But the pressure isn't evident on his face or in his voice as he talks about things he deems more important.

Matchup with Gators 'a little scary'

COLUMBIA â€" Hearing Ray Rychleski talk Monday night, it made you think South Carolina's special teams coordinator would be lining up Saturday afternoon for autographs from No. 3 Florida. "It's a little scary," Rychleski said of the 24th-ranked Gamecocks matching up with the streaking Gators.

Palmetto State looking at two teams in playoffs

South Carolina State coach Buddy Pough cannot wait for the Bulldogs to clinch their first FCS playoff bid since 1982. "We need to clean this thing up right now," said Pough, whose team can lock up the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference title and an automatic playoff bid with a win at Morgan State on Saturday. "We're all about this week."

Developers unveil plans for $750 million commercial complex

Saying they are looking beyond the roiling economy and the slowing real estate market, developers unveiled plans Tuesday for a $750 million commercial and office project that they say would take shape over the next 20 years in North Charleston. The ambitious proposed project would be built on about 300 acres of the largely vacant 1,760-acre Ingleside Plantation tract near Interstate 26 and U.S. Highway 78. The property is owned by an affiliate of Germany's Weber Automotive, which has a manufacturing plant in Summerville.

Union vote surprises some workers

Some soon-to-be unemployed workers at Vought Aircraft were surprised to learn Tuesday that a vote was taken last week to approve a collective bargaining agreement with a union that has been trying to organize the North Charleston plant.

KapStone Paper notes 'outstanding' start

KapStone Paper and Packaging Corp., commenting on its first quarter as the owner of the former MeadWestvaco paper mill in North Charleston, said it is "off to a great start" with the newly acquired business.

Retailers overloaded with applicants for even part-time holiday work

NEW YORK â€" The odds of landing a part-time job at department store operator Bealls Outlet Stores Inc. this holiday season are slimmer than getting into Harvard: It's one out of every 45.

Companies seek pension law relief

WASHINGTON â€" With pension funds facing billions of dollars in shortfalls as markets plunge, a range of companies from Ford to Verizon are pushing Congress to suspend portions of a 2-year-old law they say could force them to make job cuts as they shift scarce money into ailing retirement pools.

Town Drowning

We've reported before on "upside-down" or "underwater" mortgages in which homeowners owe more in payments than the house is worth. Tonight, we go to Mountain House, Calif., a town where roughly 90 percent of the residents are drowning as home prices continue to plunge. It's a stunning statistic that gives the town the distinction of having the highest concentration of underwater mortgages in the country. Will the government come to its rescue? ABC News correspondent Laura Marquez reports on a town reeling from the ill effects of the housing market.
