Deportation up 63 percent in Georgia, Carolinas
During the 12 months ending in October, thousands of criminals were tagged for removal from the country upon their release from prison, according to federal officials. The fed's Atlanta Field Office of Detention and Removal carried out a record 17,955 deportation orders, compared with 11,006 the previous year, officials said.
Fulton finally wrapping up ballot count
Two days and five hours after the polls closed on Election Day, Fulton County finished tabulating absentee ballots, a delay that held up the outcome of a close U.S. Senate race that appears to be headed for a runoff.
 Daughter couldn't save father in fatal fire
The 60-year-old Snellville man, whose name was not immediately released, died from injuries he sustained when a fire engulfed his bedroom around midday Thursday. The victim's adult daughter and her three young children were upstairs when a smoke detector sounded.
Nichols jury reconvenes today
The 12-person jury listened to more than 90 witnesses and saw more than 900 pieces of evidence introduced in the 32-day trial. They are considering four killings that Brian Nichols confessed to committing on March 11, 2005.

New sheriff promises to be boring
Clayton County's new sheriff, Kem Kimbrough, had one promise for residents: there will be no snipers on the roof on his first day. The Democrat defeated Republican Jack Rainwater with more than 80 percent of the vote, to replace Sheriff Victor Hill.
Gwinnett to cut 93 jobs
The cuts are the result of the sagging economy and are intended to be the first steps in a comprehensive services and cost management review program aimed at cutting ongoing expenses by $35 million, county officials said.
