Help AlterNet continue to expose the facts on Palin!

As the 2008 election comes down to the wire, AlterNet is operating at full throttle. We are covering it all, from the sleaze to the inspiration, from voter suppression to the shocking nomination of Sarah Palin. In fact, we've probably organized more information on this woman than anywhere else on the web. And in the past two months, over 3 million people have come to AlterNet to read about the pratfalls and far-right ideas of McCain's VP choice.

Now is the home stretch. But because of the global financial meltdown, our budget is quickly shrinking just as we need to be going all out. Will you help us finish the year with a bang?

We could really use your support.

Much Thanks,

Don Hazen, Executive Editor

Johns Is. toll panel rejected

A Charleston County Council committee Thursday voted against forming a citizen group to study a proposed toll road and other traffic concerns on Johns Island. Councilman Curtis Inabinett, whose district includes Johns Island, suggested earlier this month that council create the group after it voted against building the toll road, known as the Sea Islands Parkway.

Sanford allows budget cuts to go unchanged

COLUMBIA â€" Gov. Mark Sanford decided Thursday to let the Legislature's $488 million budget cuts stand, but he wants to make clear that he is not endorsing the way South Carolina spends money. His action means government agencies will now have to get down to the task of cutting services and firing employees, or asking them to take voluntary and mandatory unpaid leaves.

CHARLOTTE â€" Davidson's run to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament last season behind the play of All-America guard Stephen Curry remains a source of pride and envy for coaches in the Southern Conference. No one expresses those two emotions better than College of Charleston coach Bobby Cremins. "We're proud of Davidson and Stephen," Cremins said Thursday at the SoCon Tipoff meetings, "but we're tired of them kicking our a--."

USC's offensive line has little reason for optimism

COLUMBIA â€" The fact that Terrence Campbell figures to be the starter at right guard Saturday night tells you just about all you need to know about South Carolina's offensive line entering November. Campbell seems like a nice guy â€" he smiles with ease and speaks without apprehension â€" but it doesn't change the fact that he's 6-2 and 275 pounds.

Bulldogs linebacker journeys from Nigeria to Houston to Citadel

Tolu Akindele speaks with a curious accent, a fetching mix of west Africa and south Texas. In his voice, you can hear the lilting tones of Yoruba, the dialect of more than 25 million people in his native Nigeria and other parts of west Africa. You can also hear the Texas drawl of someone who grew up in Houston. "People say I sound country," says Akindele, a freshman linebacker for The Citadel's football team. "I just call it 'African-made, Texas-raised.' "

Rays' Morin stepping back into the role of playmaker

For longer than Travis Morin can remember, he's always enjoyed passing the puck more than scoring goals. The second-year pro will take a tape-to-tape pass over a slap shot any day. So, a year ago when he was asked to be more of a goal scorer in his first full professional season with the South Carolina Stingrays, Morin was a little out of his element.
