Barack Obama has made remarkable headway in traditionally conservative parts of the country, leading McCain in many states won by Bush in 2004. According to a new poll, Obama has also surged ahead of McCain among many groups that backed Bush in the last election. According to the New York Times, Obama is beating McCain among:
... those with incomes greater than $50,000 a year; married women; suburbanites; white Catholics, and is even competitive among white men -- a group that has not voted for a Democrat over a Republican since 1972, when pollsters began surveying people after they voted.
As the Times points out, Obama's success among former Bush supporters is hardly surprising considering the widespread dissatisfaction with Bush and the Republican Party, with "Favorability ratings for both ... at all-time lows."
